What we are seeing on the floor

Short, practical writing from people who have run the operation themselves. No thought leadership, no trend pieces — just what we keep finding when we walk a floor, and what it costs when nobody fixes it.

What we write about

Everything here comes out of engagement work, which means it is narrower and more opinionated than most operations content. We write when we have measured something, changed something, and can show the difference. Six topics carry almost all of it — the ones with something published so far are linked at the top of this page.

Operations Diagnostics

Finding what is actually slow

Audits and assessments that identify the real constraint and put a number on it. Scored against the six SCOR stages, so a finding arrives with a stage and an annual dollar figure attached rather than being blamed on the place someone happened to notice it.

Process Improvement

Why work feels stuck

Bottlenecks, handoffs, queues, rework loops and waiting. The problem-aware entry point — operators search this before they know they need anyone, and bad workflow is usually sequencing and tooling rather than a labor shortage.

Warehouse & Fulfillment

Pick, pack, ship and the dock

Distribution center, 3PL and fulfillment operations: pick/pack/ship productivity, slotting and layout, labor planning and shift structure, receiving and putaway, order accuracy and dock-to-stock time.

Inventory & Planning

Set before it reaches the floor

Inventory accuracy and cycle counting, safety stock and stock positioning, demand and supply planning, supplier performance and lead times. Where cost and service levels are quietly decided.

Manufacturing & Production

Where quality cost is created

Line balancing and changeover reduction, production scheduling, throughput and constraint management, scrap and rework. The Make stage, where cost is usually created and then blamed further downstream.

Systems & Automation

The handoff a person is doing

WMS and ERP process design, integration between platforms, inventory and order data flowing without re-keying. Most operations already own the software they need — what is missing is the handoff between two of them, currently performed by a person.

Start with the diagnostic guide

If you only read one thing here, read the walkthrough of how we run an operations diagnostic. It is the full two-week sequence — what we watch, what data we pull, which questions we ask the people doing the job, and how the findings get ranked by annual dollar cost rather than by how annoying they are. Plenty of operators run a version of it themselves and never call us, which is a perfectly good outcome.

New pieces land here first

Articles are published from our editorial workspace straight into this index, so this page is always the current list. There is no archive to dig through and no paywall. If you would rather not check back, the form below sends one short piece a month and nothing else — no drip sequence, no webinar invitations, unsubscribe in a click.

Reading only goes so far

At some point it is your operation, not a case study.

A 30-minute diagnostic call costs nothing and ends with a straight answer about where your money is going.
